J.K. Rowling Biography (TIMELINE)

Here is a photograph of the text that I used to work on the timeline with my students. It is a reading of J.K. Rowling and I used it because they like Harry Potter and because they are also looking at the biographies in language and I found it interesting to be able to work the two subjects together.

The advantages of using TimeToast for this activity

        It is a very visual activity, which helps them understand what a biography is. It's funny to them and forget that they are using English. 

The steps you followed to set up the activity

    First of all I worked on the biography in the Spanish subject. Then in English I worked and remembered the past simple with my students. Another day I gave them the text and they quickly recognized the character's name. In the photocopy and with colors they circled the dates and tried to understand what was happening ... it was easy because they understood key words.

        Then with the help of another teacher and in two hours of class (because one was impossible) they tried to make the biography, seeing step by step on the digital board how it was done.

Any problems and how you and the students solved them
   
        It's so difficult to explain and understand the using of this tools in class with childs of 10-11 years old, because they don't know how to use it, or how to download a photo and save it on the computer. So, I explained step by step  And I needed the help of another teacher to control the use of the computers and the realization of the activity.

       Another problema was the emails... because I had to create different accounts to can work with them in class. 

The students’ reaction – how did they feel about using TimeToast to complete the task?

        It was funny to them to use it. They enjoyed the creation of this timeline because it was something new. 

Some things that you would change / improve next time

    I would organize this activity as an end-of-term activity. In addition, he would need more time to work with the computers. In addition, I would first make a sketch on paper so that it would be faster to transfer the information directly to the digital tool.

  • They worked in a cooperative way, looking for pictures, writing and reading. 
  • They understood that it is a biography and how to make a timeline, ordering the events chronologically.
  • The use of English in a funny way and the reading of text scanning and skimming for the most important information.

    Please, let me reflect on your blog, as we need to do it in one of the last tasks of the ICT course.

    I like how you get to the point: your ideas are clearly transmitted and you present the information with a great organisation. Your resources are very interesting and your reflections about how to improve your activities are honest and useful.

    I would improve your blog by modifying the colouring appearance, as it is weird to find a blue background colour and also a black background for the text.
